I sort of already described this activity in my other blog...but I'll try to describe it in more detail.

Mike asked the whole class to get into line according to their birthday, but without saying a word. At first we all just kind of looked confused, but then I noticed most people holding up their fingers representing the number of the month that they were born in. Once they found people around the same month as them they started discovering specific days by again showing the number on their fingers. At the beginning of the group around January and March, John was trying to tell me and a classmate when his birthday was, but instead of just using numbers like everyone else did, he also used a slash and we really didn't know what he was trying to say at first. Everyone had already become accustomed to a certain language and the "slash" had not been a part of that.
I think that the exercise was to show how easy it is to communicate through math. Everyone for the most part got into the correct order without saying a word, and numbers was the language we all used to do that.
